Jesus speaks of love as his “new commandment” to the disciples. Is this not something of an oxymoron, to speak of love with the authoritarian language of commandment? Yet, even understood to be more freely given than commanded, love still makes a claim on our lives, makes a powerful impact on the lives of others, and gives life meaning and direction.
