Through the prophet Jeremiah God reminds the people that false, dangerous leaders are responsible for their exile, but they will not prevail. In their place, the promise is that God will raise up new leadership from the lineage of David, the shepherd king. Zechariah, the father of the baby who will become John the Baptist Zechariah has been unable to speak since he had openly scoffed at an angel who had told him that his wife Elizabeth would get pregnant at an advanced age. After their son is born, Zechariah is filled with the Holy Spirit and speaks about how God will soon act to fulfill an ancient promise.
