Having challenged King Ahab and Queen Jezebel for worshipping foreign gods, the prophet Elijah legitimately feared for his life and has been on the run for quite some time. God has spoken to Elijah in deep silence, so Elijah is now ready to try to convince the people to come back to worshipping the one true God. Elijah proposes a “battle of the prophets” whereby the winning side will have their deity consume a sacrifice. Elijah alone is set against four hundred fifty royally-endorsed prophets of the Canaanite god Baal. The drama is compelling and the stakes are high.
