The Hebrew Bible affirms Josiah as one of very few good kings of ancient Israel. Alongside his desire to have a strong relationship with God which includes restoring the Temple to the worship of the God of Israel. Beyond this, Josiah is humble and actively concerned about the welfare of all his subjects. A scroll is found during renovations that hearkens back to the original covenant with God. After active discernment, Josiah takes this discovery as a sign for a new start with God starting with himself, but including also the religious and legal establishment and all the people.
