Leadership Search

Robertson-Wesley is seeking to fill some leadership roles. Most key leadership roles are a two year term with the possibility of renewing for another 2 years. Each year different roles become vacant after a person has severed their term.
This year we are seeking the following leadership roles:

Incoming Chair of the Board
Treasurer
Chair of Ministry and Personnel
Northern Spirit Regional Reps

Process:

  • Review the job description for each role; reflect on whether you have the skills and passion for this work. Reflect on whether you know someone in the community of faith who you believe to have these skills.
  • Have a conversation with the person serving or who has served in the role to learn more about it, you can contact the office for their info. You may want to attend a meeting to see what it is like and if it is a good fit.

In Coming Chair of the Board

Role: The role of the Incoming Board Chair is to support the Board Chair as needed, and to develop the experience and knowledge of the church, its mission, and its ministry that are needed for upcoming terms as Board Chair and Past Board Chair.

Duties:

  • Assume the duties of Board Chair in their absence or as appointed by the Board Chair.
  • Attend (all) Board, Executive and Board of Management meetings.
  • Update the Board Manual as needed.
  • Become Board Chair at the end of term as Incoming Board Chair.
  • Undertake additional duties as requested by the Chair.

Term:  The Incoming Board Chair will be a one-year term with a three year commitment.   This three-year commitment consists of one year term as Incoming Board Chair, one year term as Board Chair, and a one year term as Past Board Chair.

Skills:

  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Facilitation and diplomacy skills
  • Good listener
  • Ability to identify skills and resources in the congregation
  • Communication skills and basic computer skills
  • Basic budget understanding
  • Basic understanding of parliamentary procedure

Treasurer

Duties:

  • To attend all Board meetings (generally monthly), Finance Committee meetings (generally quarterly), the Annual Congregational Meeting, and the Clarke and Wesley Trust Funds meeting (annually)
  • To report on the monthly and year to date financial position of the Church
  • To present the budget to the Board for approval and to the Community of Faith for final approval
  • To liaise with Bank and Fund Managers
  • To ensure that an adequate number of cheque signatories is maintained.
  • To liaise with Envelope Stewards and Offering Counters, including establishing Counting Schedule

Term: Two-year term with an option of renewal for a second term.

Skills:

  • Ideally, the treasurer will have at least 5 years of experience in the full accounting cycle and an in depth knowledge of financial reporting methods.
  • Computer skill are essential
  • Organization and attention to detail

Time Commitment:

The time commitment should be (on average) about eight hours per month. There are past treasurers who can fill in when the treasurer is away.

Chair of Ministry and Personnel (M&P):

Role: The role of the Chair of Ministry and Personnel is to lead the committee that provides support to church staff on employment matters, while overseeing the relationship between the staff and the congregation. The Chair of M&P attends monthly board meetings and maintains a close contact with the Northern Spirit Regional Council Pastoral Relations Committee.

Responsibilities:

  • Drafts agenda and chairs monthly meetings of the M&P Committee.
  • In collaboration with other committee members, ensures that annual performance reviews are completed.
  • Ensures that the committee and staff regularly review staff working conditions, job descriptions and compensation.
  • Ensures that staff are provided with opportunities to make use of training opportunities.
  • Ensures that the United Church policies are followed.
  • Ensures Alberta’s employment standards are followed.

Term: Two-year term with an option of renewal for a second term.

Skills:

  • Interest in and some experience in personnel management and human resources
  • Communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Listening and ability to keep confidential matters
  • Ability to commit 4 hours per month
  • Must be a member of The United Church of Canada

Regional Council Representative

Role: Robertson-Wesley United Church belongs to the Northern Spirit Region (wider church) of The United Church of Canada. The church is structured in a similar way to the Canadian Government at this time. We have 3 courts of governance. The congregation of Robertson-Wesley sends 4 lay representatives to attend the annual meeting of our region which, in our location is the city wide level of the church. The Regional Council functions in a similar manner to the church board. We elect four lay members to this wider church decision making circle, and they report back to the congregation decision and information that pertain to our mission and ministry of the church.

Position:

Four lay representatives are elected to the Northern Spirit Regional Council on behalf of Robertson-Wesley United Church

Duties:

  • To attend a weekend gathering each year to decide on vision, policies and practices. (This year the meeting will take place May virtually on 2 different nights)
  • Share information with the congregation on wider church activities and resources (through Between the Aisles, R-W report and the bulletin boards in Memorial Hall)
  • To take on a role at the Regional Level in a committee that is of interest.
  • Attend 3 board meetings per year (the reps rotate) as a corresponding (non voting) member.

Term: Two years, renewable.

Skills:

  • The Regional Council representatives should have basic knowledge of how The United Church of Canada “works”.
  • Should have good listening/reporting skills.
  • Willing to learn as we live into the new structure.
  • Should be a full member of The United Church of Canada.
